In my virtual carriage project I have completed the 28ft non-corridor carriages referenced in Philip Millard’s excellent book, but note that in the 1915 LNWR Coach Diagram Book there are another 10 diagrams for 28ft four wheelers. The majority of these appear to have been numbered in the supplementary list, namely Diagrams 122, 201, 301-305, 366 and 367 – Diagram 387 is a full brake and will be attempted in due course. What status did these carriages have as “supplementary”? Were they stored for use as and when required, or just stored?

The diagrams you mention are ex-North London Railway Stock, added to the LNWR Diagram Book around 1920 when they became redundant on the NLR owing to new construction. They were indeed supplementary stock (0 number prefix), which was not otherwise included in the Diagram Book.

Supplementary stock was not stored, but tended to be used for workmens' trains and the like. The ex-North London coaches were found (inter-alia) on services from Leicester to Coventry and workmens' trains to Leyland (Lancs).

These coaches retained their NLR varnished teak livery until withdrawal in the early-mid 1920s.

Many thanks for the detailed reply, and as usual very much appreciated.
