The Wensleydale Railway will be running this carriage in 2017 as part of the Afternoon Tea special trains (see https://photos.wr-rail-link.co.uk/2017/2017-02.php for its arrival at Leeming Bar. Can anyone point me in the direction of the history of this carriage? Many thanks

The snippets online mostly relate to its rebuilding at Embsay:

Before that it was at the NNR for many years and deteriorated to the point where I thought it was beyond repair, but where was it before that?

Mike - many thanks. Will give me a good excuse to visit the Wensleydale Railway once again this summer...

Peter,

There was also an article in a model magazine about 20 years ago - can't remember which one. As I'm sure you know, one peculiarity is the length of 66ft 6in unlike (virtually) all other LNWR 12-wheelers which were 65ft 6in.

Mike - thanks again. I see from the Society's periodical bibliography that the Saloon has been covered in the following:
Railway & Travel Monthly
New Director's Saloon 1914 08/45 76

LNWR Society Journal
Director's Inspection Saloon Diagram 2 No. 5318. Inc photos and drawings. 2007 05/07 3

LNWR Society Odds and Ends
LNWR Directors' Saloon 1978 8

LNWR Society Premier Lines/Newsletter
Photo. Directors Saloon 1988 070 16

though I couldn't spot a modelling reference. Presumably it is also covered in Jenkinson's work on LNWR carriages.

Will have to get to the Society's library!

Peter,

If it is not too short notice there is the modelling day this weekend at Kenilworth, the archive will be available, just restricted space to lay out larger plans etc due to the models being out on the tables.

If you look on the Webb site or your latest newsletter the next general open days are listed on page 2 I think

Kind Regards

David

Just to say that volunteers on the Wensleydale Railway are working on bringing the carriage into service for the summer afternoon trains. John Tong posted the attached yesterday:

I visited Leeming Bar and saw the freshly painted LNWR Directors' Saloon which Volunteers worked on the day before in the yard. A painter was inside and will take about a week to finish his job. It looked nice alongside the platform in the sun.

The only ref I can find on Dave Pennington's excellent Bibliography is "LNWR 12 Wheeled Inspection Saloon c1913. Plans & photos" in "Model Railways" May 1974 p21x (given as p21 but more likely 2x1 or 21x)
There is also a ref to a Directors' Saloon of 1897. "Model Railways" aug 1974 p400. Possibly that's not the right one though? (2 mins work on LNWRS Webbsite)
Nothing relevant in MRN as far as I can see
