Whitchurch Painting.pdf
The attached photograph of a painting entitled LNWR DEPARTURE was taken at Crewe Heritage Centre 3/8/2018. It depicts a train about to leave a station which I identify as Whitchurch (Shropshire). The painting is signed by the artist as Derek Wheeler March 1986 and depicts a Whale Experiment class locomotive No.902 Combermere leaving the station in the direction of Crewe. Research has shown that the locomotive was built in September 1907, renumbered by the LMS to 5487 in February 1927 and withdrawn in October 1934. The train will pass-by Combermere within a few minutes of leaving Whitchurch.
Talking to Staff, they had not recognised the location of the painting but did concur with my conclusion.
There seems to be little known about the painting and there is very little about the Artist.
Can anyone provide more information on the detail in the painting. Does it perhaps originate from a photograph with No.902 used as the subject matter, and there is also the formation of the train to consider.
