To those interested in staff records the Ancestry web site now has many of these records on-line. A subscription is required to view the document, but searches are free.
Despite the price it is certainly cheaper and the search facility much easier than visiting Kew and wading through large volumes in the hope you can find what you're looking for.

i have taken out a subsrciption on ancestry and have found loads of records relating to staff employed in ireland by the various railways including many on Dundalk, Newry & Greenore railway
unfortunately not all staff records have survives as i am sure you would all be aware
in the case of DN&GR staff, the clerical & supervisary staff records are what you find on ancestry. the operating staff records which i believe were locally maintained have not survived
this in the case of DN&GR was due to local records being transferred in 1933 to GNR(I) when they took over operation of DN&GR
when GNR(I) closed all the surviving DNGR records were transferred to CIE
then eventually the remain surviving records were transferred to IRRS archives and it is from the surviving GNR(I) staff cards in IRRS which i have completed scanning
i also have been promised access to the Greenore school registers which have recently been re discovered in private hands
a further thought, via ancestry (subscribed of course) you can also access the military records
i have for example accessed the records relating to George Forsythe who was railway shunter in Greenore when he signed up to join the Royal Regiment of Artillery no.30347
this would be useful in filling in details of the other staff on the L&NWR Roll of Honour
trusting this additional info to be of assistance

As society staff historian I now have a full sign-on to Ancestry.com so can access the documents that Peter mentions. If any society member requires copies of documents or would like some help with searches let me know and I will do my best to assist.

I will include a piece in the next newsletter about this, the release by Ancestry.com came just as the last newsletter was being produced so I missed including it.

Email me at staffhist@lnwrs.org.uk with details of what is required.

Regards

Martin O'Keeffe

Good work John!

as many people will know, the Divisional staff registers (Traffic, Coaching & Police) were closed in 1910/11 and the salaried Staff Registers about 1916 when the LNWR went over to a card index system. These TU registers will help to fill the gap for later dates.

They may also be useful for Engineering, Loco and Goods wages staff for whom records are fragmentary to non-existent!
