An enquiry from Kettering:

The gentleman's Great Uncle was a signalman at Carnforth for many years. In later paperwork, his job title is described as "Railway Traffic Manager".

Is this a specific LNWR job title, if so do we know any more about the role, or was it just an invented 'posh' name for a signalman?

Thank you

I don't think the LNWR had a post of "Traffic Manager" (although I could be proved wrong) but they certainly had people who managed the traffic! Maybe he was a Traffic Inspector, Yard Master or something similar. A look at the L&C section of the Staff Register (if it exists) would show exactly what staff were employed at Carnforth. Even if the Divisional Register no longer exists, the full set of LNWR Salaried Staff Volumes are in RAIL410 at TNA. (Assuming that he was salaried, that is). They are searchable by name on ancestry.co.uk.

Of course, an railwayman at Carnforth could equally be an employee of the FR, or of the FR & MR Joint committee.
